The optical system is based on the standard RMS 160mm ‘tube’ length and can accommodate an interchangeable range of standard RMS eyepieces. The compact hand-held form required an inverted design with the optical path folded three dimensionally using one Z axis mirror and two XY axis mirrors The objective lenses, designed and manufactured by Newton Microscopes, are highly miniaturised in order to reduce size and weight.

The Aluminium optical chassis assembly is totally stand-alone, with the external moulded casing clad around, rather than integrated, providing a high level of protection from external forces and general physical shock.

The optical system is illuminated by a white-light balanced miniature light emitting diode. The narrow-beam angle and tube mounting collimate the light source, whilst contrast levels can be adjusted with the light arm angle. The circuit design provides variable brightness control with power options from internal batteries or external mini USB connection.
